Our Brief History
Beacon Evangelical Church began in 1987 as a union of three Handsworth churches - Lawnswood, Waverhill Road and Calvary.
We pooled our resources and relocated to our current building in Sandwell Road, at the top of the hill - hence 'Beacon' Church, a light for our community.
Several years ago we felt God was saying to us, 'Go!' You cannot stay within your four walls and keep this gift of life to yourselves - you have to share it! So we have made it our aim to find ways of presenting God's message of hope through love, service and through words to those who have never heard it before.
We are striving to become a beacon of the good news of Jesus Christ, to be a vibrant, welcoming inner city church focused on sharing Jesus' message and living as His disciples.
Worship: We aim to live a life of worship, loving God with our whole life, not just when we come to church services
Service: We aim to love one another with the love God has shown to us and to love our neighbours in the community
Obedience: We aim to obey and live out the God's Word, The Bible
Excellence: It is important for us to strive for excellence in whatever we do, doing it for God
We have two worship services in Handsworth every Sunday at 10am & 12.30pm. Adults and children worship together and then we have a Sunday School for children up to the age of 18.
On the first Sunday of the month there is one 'all-age' service at 10am in Handsworth and then Beacon Lyndhurst meets for a service at the Malcolm Locker Centre on the Lyndhurst Estate in Erdington at 2pm.
What we do - our Mission
We believe reach our vision by focusing on these three activities:
1. Introducing people to Jesus
We believe God has told us to 'Go' into our community, finding ways to care for people with God's love and introducing them to the good news of Jesus so that can have the opportunity to follow him.
2. Growing disciples of Jesus
But we also want to 'be fruitful', helping one another to grow into strong disciples, experiencing the love and support of the Church, the 'body' of Christ and growing more mature and more like Jesus in character daily.
3. Equipping, empowering, sending to serve Jesus
God has a plan for each person's life, empowering us with the abilities and gifts we need to fulfil his plan. We aim to empower and equip people to serve God in the Church and in the whole of their lives. We committed to sending people wherever God wants them to go and to planting Christian communities in obedience to his plan to 'multiply' us.
